Meta is overhauling its cross-application management system.

Meta has unveiled an upgraded Meta Account system aimed at streamlining user access and management across its vast array of services, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Meta’s AI glasses. The company acknowledges the complexity of its current ecosystem, where users often juggle multiple accounts. The new Meta Account system is set to be rolled out over the coming year, enhancing the user experience beyond what the existing Accounts Center provides.

With the introduction of the Meta Account, users will have the option to set a universal password that covers all their Meta accounts. Additionally, this system allows for enhanced security through Passkeys, which can utilise biometric authentication like fingerprints or facial recognition, as well as device passwords. Meta promises to offer security recommendations, including updates on multi-factor authentication and login alerts to ensure users remain informed about their account security.

Meta has stated that users will be able to manage various settings—such as passwords, two-factor authentication, and associated email addresses—through the Meta Account, simplifying account management much like the current Accounts Center. This centralised approach means that users won’t need to update their settings across different apps.

Furthermore, the Meta Account aims to assist parents in monitoring their teenagers’ activities across Meta’s platforms. The Family Center dashboard within the Meta Account will allow parents to oversee settings for services like Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Meta Horizon from a single interface.

The system also respects individual app settings, allowing users to customise their experiences according to their preferences. For instance, privacy settings related to who can view Facebook posts or tag users in Instagram photos will still be governed within their respective apps.

Importantly, the new system does not compel users to link all their accounts if they prefer to keep them separate. There will be flexibility to add or remove accounts from the Meta Account at any given time, catering to user preferences for account management.

This initiatives reflects Meta’s ongoing commitment to enhancing user privacy and security while simplifying the management of its extensive and diverse suite of applications.
