Shade Secures $14 Million to Empower Creative Teams in Effortless Video Library Searches

by admin

Creative and marketing teams often find conventional cloud storage solutions insufficient for managing the growing volumes of files generated by their work. The rise of AI-driven content creation exacerbates this issue, leading to an increased need for an efficient method to store and search through vast media libraries.

In response to this challenge, New York-based startup Shade has developed a specialized cloud storage platform aimed at agencies, sports media teams, consumer brands, real estate companies, and podcasters. Founded by Brandon Fan and Emerson Dove in 2024, Shade offers a solution to the file search frustrations they encountered with existing services, such as Dropbox. They raised a total of $20 million in funding, led by Khosla Ventures, and recognized the need to create a cohesive storage solution that serves as a “single source of truth” for teams.

Shade distinguishes itself with two key features. First, it incorporates a natural language search function powered by auto-tagging, allowing users to find specific moments in videos based on highly detailed queries. For example, a search for “a person holding a laptop in snow” can pinpoint particular scenes throughout a collection of clips. Additionally, the platform automatically transcribes videos to enhance search capabilities based on content meaning and visual recognition.

Second, Shade employs a unique “streamable” file system, enabling users to begin working with their files almost immediately without waiting for complete downloads. This feature is particularly useful in scenarios where bandwidth may be limited, as users can pin essential files for quick access.

Beyond storage capabilities, Shade enhances team collaboration by facilitating feedback tied to specific timestamps in videos and enabling diversified file-sharing through multiple links with adjustable permissions. For final client submissions, teams can create branded collections with security features, such as password protection and expiry dates.

The pricing model for Shade is user-friendly, offering subscriptions at $20 per seat, per month, which includes unlimited drives, AI indexing, and storage. Up to 15 users can collaborate per workspace, with an allowance for 150 guests.

Shade is not without competition; startups like Poly and Memories.ai are also innovating in AI-powered file storage solutions. However, Shade stands out with its foundationally restructured design, which integrates streaming, indexing, and collaboration into one coherent system, as highlighted by Keith Rabois of Khosla Ventures.

Looking ahead, Shade aims to enhance its search functionality across various file types and is developing a no-code platform that will enable creative teams to automate workflows efficiently. Fan describes Shade as a versatile tool, likening its foundational capabilities to “Lego blocks” that can adapt to various business needs beyond creative teams in the future.
