WhatsApp Introduces Prepaid Phone Recharge Feature in India Amidst Slow Growth in Payment Usage

by admin

WhatsApp is set to introduce prepaid phone recharge capabilities in India, aiming to enhance user transactions within the app. This initiative comes as WhatsApp faces challenges competing against prominent players like PhonePe and Google Pay in the digital payments landscape.

On Thursday, WhatsApp announced its collaboration with fintech company PayU to facilitate prepaid phone recharges for major operators such as Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea directly through the app. PayU confirmed this feature will become available to all users in India within the next two weeks.

Despite boasting over 500 million users in India and launching its payment services in 2020, WhatsApp remains a minor competitor in the digital payments sector, which is largely dominated by the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) supported by the government. In March, WhatsApp processed over 130 million transactions, a stark contrast to PhonePe and Google Pay, which recorded more than 10.5 billion and 7.5 billion transactions, respectively.

Even after the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) removed onboarding limits for WhatsApp Pay in late 2024, allowing full user access, the app continues to lag behind its competitors. However, since the lifting of these restrictions, WhatsApp’s payment usage has seen substantial improvement, with UPI transactions more than doubling from approximately 61 million in January 2025. During the same period, PhonePe and Google Pay experienced growth rates of about 30% and 20%, respectively, still dominating the UPI transaction landscape.

The new recharge feature is part of WhatsApp’s broader strategy to integrate payments and additional services within the app. Users can already pay bills, purchase metro tickets, and access various government services via chat interfaces, as the parent company Meta seeks to enhance user engagement beyond standard messaging.

Additionally, WhatsApp has introduced a ₹ (rupee) icon on its home screen to streamline access to its payments section, which now includes mobile recharges and peer-to-peer transfers.

Ravi Garg, Director of Business Messaging at Meta India, stated that these updates are intended to simplify everyday transactions within WhatsApp, reinforcing the company’s commitment to making the app more valuable for users while attempting to increase transaction volumes.

Overall, as WhatsApp continues to innovate and expand its services in India, it is also navigating a competitive environment where established players have a significant edge.
