Era Computer Secures $11 Million Investment to Develop Software Platform for AI Devices

by admin

In April, the New York-based startup Era Computer gathered artists who had received its developer kit to showcase innovative gadgets they created. These experimental devices included a souvenir offering trivia about France, a stock-monitoring tool that indicates when users can retire, and an air quality monitoring device. The unifying element among these inventions is Era’s platform, designed to empower hardware developers to create AI agents and manage orchestrations for their devices. Rather than producing hardware, Era focuses on providing a software layer that facilitates custom voice generation and enhances existing technologies, like headphones.

Since its inception, Era has secured $11 million in funding, which comprises a $9 million seed round led by Abstract Ventures and BoxGroup, along with contributions from Collaborative Fund and Mozilla Ventures. Prior to this, the company raised $2 million in pre-seed funding, attracting notable investors such as Caterina Fake, Ken Kocienda, Tony Wang, and others.

Founded by CEO Liz Dorman, CTO Alex Ollman, and CPO Megan Bole, Era benefits from the leadership’s rich experience in AI and technology. Dorman, previously with Humane, worked on AI orchestration before joining HP. Ollman contributed to agentic frameworks at HP, while Bole’s past projects included work with Jony Ive and Sam Altman.

Investors view Era’s orchestration platform as distinct due to its ability to dynamically route tasks across multiple models and manage challenges associated with real-world connectivity. Dorman’s vision is to create an intelligence layer that could potentially replace traditional app models, allowing for a variety of intelligent devices to be developed by a broader range of creators, rather than just a select few in tech hubs.

The company currently offers over 130 large language models (LLMs) from various providers, supporting diverse gadget formats such as glasses, jewellery, and smart home devices. Dorman predicts an explosion of possibilities in AI hardware, asserting that technology is increasingly being commoditised.

Era’s platform is designed for scalability, accommodating millions of devices while enabling custom AI experiments aimed at specific audiences. As more users embrace AI gadgets, Era’s goal is to allow them to personalise their experience by selecting their preferred memory and model providers, all while safeguarding privacy. The company intends to extend its platform to the open-source and maker community to showcase its versatility.

Despite the challenges faced by the AI hardware sector—with notable companies struggling to establish successful models—Era is optimistic about the future. The founders believe that as consumers witness more practical applications of AI devices, the demand for these innovations will grow.
