BMW i Ventures has introduced a new $300 million fund, signalling a strategic focus on how artificial intelligence will transform the automotive industry. This initiative, revealed on Wednesday, aims to invest in early-stage through Series B startups across North America and Europe, specifically those innovating in agentic AI, physical AI (which encompasses robotics and autonomous vehicles), as well as industrial software and advanced materials. With this latest fund, BMW i Ventures has increased its total capital under management to $1.1 billion.
A key challenge for the fund is to identify AI startups that genuinely innovate rather than merely following current trends. Marcus Behrendt, managing partner at BMW i Ventures, emphasised the importance of adapting to emerging trends that will shape the future, rather than jumping on the latest bandwagon.
Reflecting on its past investments, BMW i Ventures began its journey with a focus on autonomous vehicles and digital technologies in its first fund, launched in 2016. Its second fund, founded in 2021, shifted attention towards sustainability and supply chain innovations. Behrendt and fellow managing partner Kaspar Sage believe that AI represents not just a significant trend but the foundational element for future technological advancements, predicting a profound impact on robotics, software development, and automotive production.
Sage, operating from the Silicon Valley office, highlighted that some promising opportunities lie in seemingly mundane areas with substantial potential. For instance, Synera, a German company supported by BMW i Ventures, employs AI agents to enhance design and engineering processes. Initially a provider of integration software for industrial engineering, Synera has integrated AI technology into its platform, enabling significant efficiencies. The firm has demonstrated that time-consuming design processes, typically spanning three weeks, can be drastically reduced to mere minutes using AI, showcasing its transformative potential.
While the new fund shifts towards AI, BMW i Ventures also remains dedicated to its established categories, such as advanced materials and circular supply chains. Behrendt clarified that the focus on AI is intended to enrich sustainability efforts rather than replace previous initiatives.
Currently, there have been no investments made from this third fund; however, the prior second fund is nearing completion, having invested in over 35 ventures, some of which are AI-centric. Five recent investments remain undisclosed as the firm prepares to unveil more details in due course. This strategic expansion into AI highlights BMW i Ventures’ commitment to remaining at the forefront of technological evolution within the automotive sector.
