Shapes is a newly launched app that facilitates group conversations between humans and AI characters, emerging with $8 million in seed funding. Founded in 2022, it boasts over 400,000 monthly active users and aims to mitigate concerns related to “AI Psychosis,” a phenomenon where extended interactions with AI can lead to paranoia and delusions. Unlike traditional AI interactions that are often solitary, Shapes promotes social interaction by incorporating AI into group chats, which is where most human communication occurs.
According to Shapes’ CEO, Anushk Mittal, the platform’s design reflects the collaborative nature of human conversations. Users can interact with AI characters termed “Shapes,” which are integrated seamlessly into group chats. These AI entities are distinctly labeled for transparency but enjoy the same operational capabilities as human users. In fact, users have created over three million unique Shapes, often inspired by fandom, enriching community engagement around shared interests.
When signing up, users select their interests, enabling the app to recommend relevant group chats. Mittal and co-founder Noorie Dhingra assert that one of the major challenges in maintaining group chats is hesitation among participants to initiate conversation. Shapes addresses this by enabling AI agents to kick-start dialogues, ensuring that every user feels acknowledged and engaged. Unlike other AI interfaces that require summoning, Shapes have the autonomy to generate messages independently.
While apps like ChatGPT allow for group chats, Shapes distinguishes itself with a focus on social interactions and community engagement rather than just collaborative tasks. However, the startup understands that integrating AI in conversations may not appeal to everyone, positioning itself as a platform for users who are deeply invested in online socialising. Mittal highlighted that Shapes promotes human connection, catering to online enthusiasts looking to engage with their passions, where AI acts as a facilitator rather than a primary participant.
Shapes has experienced significant growth, reportedly increasing its user base sixfold since the beginning of the year, with users spending two to four hours daily on the app. The recent funding will be directed towards enhancing app development and expanding user acquisition. This round was led by Lightspeed and featured contributions from AI Capital Partners, AI Grant, and several angel investors.
