Roman Teslyuk, CEO and founder of Earth AI, expressed his frustration with delays impacting the efficiency of his startup’s operations. Earth AI has dedicated itself to exploring new sources of critical minerals, such as copper, platinum, and palladium, in unexplored regions of Australia. The innovative use of AI models has pinpointed several promising locations; however, the process of verifying mineral concentrations via drilling has been hampered by significant slowdowns in laboratory analyses.
Currently, the labs tasked with testing rock samples face extensive backlogs, which typically last around two months but have recently surged to over four months due to increased demand. Teslyuk highlighted that the company is currently 7,000 metres behind in processing critical samples, which slows down the decision-making process regarding potential mining sites.
To combat these delays, Earth AI has decided to establish its own laboratory facilities, aiming to cut down processing time dramatically from five months to just five days. While the AI models effectively identify worthwhile locations for drilling, the actual confirmation of mineral distribution relies heavily on timely lab results after drilling. Teslyuk emphasised the need for rapid feedback in order to refine the exploration process, indicating that delayed answers lead to less informed drilling decisions.
Once cores are drilled, they require laboratory analysis to ascertain their mineral content. Teslyuk pointed out that visual inspection isn’t sufficient to determine whether valuable minerals, such as gold, are present. For ultimate evaluations of a mine’s economic viability, including factors that might sway potential sales, Earth AI will still rely on third-party experts to verify findings. However, in-house labs promise to enhance efficiency during exploration by directing drilling efforts more accurately based on quick, reliable data.
The speed of response to critical queries about mineral locations can significantly impact exploration strategy and costs. Teslyuk stated that timely data enables the team to ask the right questions and narrow down optimal drilling locations, thus maximising resource efficiency. As Earth AI moves forward with these enhancements, the startup aims to revolutionise the process of mineral exploration and improve the overall effectiveness of mineral resource management.
