Einride, a Swedish electric heavy-duty truck startup, is set to introduce 75 of its trucks into Amazon’s Relay freight network, marking a significant partnership in the realm of e-commerce logistics. Under this agreement, Einride will also establish charging infrastructure at five locations across the United States. It was announced recently that the startup will retain ownership and management of the trucks, which will be operated by drivers using Amazon’s Relay app—a platform launched in 2017 that enables truck drivers to book transportation gigs with Amazon.
Roozbeh Charli, CEO of Einride, expressed that collaborating with Amazon serves as a vital endorsement of the company’s technological capabilities and strategic approach. He highlighted that the partnership would facilitate growth and further enhance operational expertise in a complex logistics environment.
Einride has made headlines with its dual strategy in freight transportation, boasting a fleet of approximately 200 electric trucks serving major companies like Heineken and PepsiCo in regions such as Europe and North America. In addition to conventional trucks, Einride is also innovating in the autonomous vehicle sector with its unique cab-less pod-like trucks, although these autonomous models are not part of the current agreement with Amazon.
This partnership arrives at a pivotal moment for Einride as it prepares to conclude its merger with Legato Merger Corp., a move that will transition the startup into a publicly traded entity.
While this collaboration may not significantly impact Amazon’s vast $2.7 trillion enterprise, it aligns with the company’s ambitious sustainability objectives—specifically a commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in its operations by 2040. An Amazon spokesperson noted the agreement’s relevance in the larger effort to electrify heavy-duty trucking, acknowledging that decarbonising their transportation network is a formidable challenge.
The introduction of Einride’s electric trucks into Amazon’s system not only enhances operational efficiency but also supports the retail giant’s efforts to meet sustainability targets, marking a progressive step in the transformation of freight logistics.
