TikTok Unveils ‘Campus Hub’: Introducing Group Chats and Feeds for College Students

by admin

TikTok has announced the launch of a new feature called “Campus Hub,” aimed at enhancing connections among college students. According to an email sent to TechCrunch, this hub includes exclusive group chats and tailored feeds, allowing students to engage with their campus communities during the summer months.

The Campus Hub builds on TikTok’s campus verification feature, introduced in August, which enables users to display their university affiliation on their profiles. Through a partnership with UNiDAYS, a student verification platform, TikTok allows access for students from over 6,000 universities to connect with peers.

Once students confirm their enrollment, they can access the dedicated Campus Hub, enabling them to create group chats of up to 300 members, restricted to verified students from the same institution. TikTok emphasises that these group chats can facilitate ongoing communication, help plan reunions, or maintain friendships over the summer break.

This initiative could encourage students to use TikTok not just for entertainment but also as a platform for academic discussions and community engagement, similar to functionalities found in apps like Discord or Facebook Messenger.

Additionally, users will benefit from a personalised content feed showcasing posts from verified students and university-related material. This feature is designed to keep students informed and involved with campus life, trends, and important announcements, regardless of their physical location.

The introduction of the Campus Hub recalls the origins of Facebook, which focused primarily on college campuses and required a valid “.edu” email for student registration. TikTok’s efforts to integrate academic elements into its platform come amid a broader trend among social media companies, including Instagram, which has implemented similar college-related features for enhanced student connectivity.

Overall, TikTok’s Campus Hub aims to foster a sense of community among students, keeping them engaged with their peers and university happenings even when they are away from campus.
