Nvidia is solidifying its presence in the artificial intelligence sector with a strategic investment. NVentures, the company’s corporate venture capital arm, has invested in Legora, marking its inaugural foray into legal AI technology. The Swedish startup aims to streamline legal operations through AI, competing with established US competitor Harvey.
Legora, recently boosted by a $50 million extension in its Series D funding round, now has notable investors including Atlassian and NVentures. This comes shortly after the startup raised $550 million in its primary Series D round. Recently, Legora achieved an impressive milestone of surpassing $100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR), which has contributed to its valuation skyrocketing to $5.6 billion.
While Legora’s valuation continues to rise, it is still trailing behind Harvey, which reached an $11 billion valuation with the support of Sequoia and other prominent investors. Legora boasts clients from prestigious law firms, such as Bird & Bird and Cleary Gottlieb, and has quickly gained traction by being adopted by over 1,000 law firms and in-house legal teams across 50 countries since its platform launch just 18 months ago.
Both companies are engaged in a competitive landscape as they target global expansion. Legora is establishing multiple offices worldwide, with a particular emphasis on the US market, while Harvey aims to expand its presence in Europe. The competitive dynamics are intensifying as both startups leverage capital for marketing, with Harvey having recently collaborated with actor Gabriel Macht from the TV series Suits, while Legora has engaged Jude Law in its advertising campaign.
Amidst this rivalry, both startups are grounded in large language models developed by major AI companies, which could potentially become future competitors. The release of a legal plugin for the AI model Claude by Anthropic has raised concerns among publicly listed legal software firms, leading to stock declines in the sector.
Despite the pressures, Legora’s CEO Max Junestrand expressed confidence, stating that the application of foundation models is where the true value lies. He emphasized that legal teams who effectively integrate AI now will play a pivotal role in shaping the industry’s future.
Nvidia’s investment in Legora signals confidence in the startup’s potential resilience against larger competitors and foundational model providers. However, Nvidia’s strategy of broad investment in AI companies indicates a cautious approach, having previously invested in both Anthropic and OpenAI before reassessing its commitments.
