Stripe, the financial services platform, has unveiled a digital wallet tailored for the AI era, enabling autonomous agents to handle tasks such as purchasing goods, booking reservations, and acquiring tickets. This innovation was announced during Stripe’s recent annual conference, where the company launched Link, a versatile wallet designed to consolidate various payment methods and monitor user spending habits, as well as maintain oversight of recurring subscriptions.
Accessible via web, iOS, and Android platforms, Link facilitates connections to a range of payment methods, including debit and credit cards, bank accounts, crypto wallets, and buy now/pay later services. Users can also save essential details for seamless online transactions, such as billing and shipping information. Additionally, Link enables users to track expenditures and manage subscription payments, including the ability to update payment methods for ongoing services, and offers a 90-day purchase protection for select merchants.
What sets Link apart is its designed compatibility with autonomous AI agents, such as OpenClaw. With the growing trend of utilising AI, notably among consumers investing in devices for running these always-on agents, the need for security around payment information has surged. Link addresses this concern by allowing users to connect their AI agents and authorise spending without disclosing sensitive payment details.
Setting up Link requires users to grant their AI agent access through a standard OAuth authentication process. The agent can then submit a spending request that awaits user approval, ensuring user control over transactions. Although currently limited to traditional payment methods, Stripe has indicated that support for agentic tokens, stablecoins, and alternative payment options will be introduced in the near future.
Users will receive notifications on mobile or web platforms to review and approve spending requests, with the chance to confirm transactions before sharing payment credentials with an AI agent. Stripe aims to enhance user customisation, allowing users to define spending limits or determine when their agents can operate autonomously without prior approval.
The Link wallet is built on Stripe’s innovative Issuing for agents feature, which allows users to create virtual cards for their agents to make autonomous purchases with real-time authorisation and spending oversight. Rather than granting agents direct access to payment information, users can choose to provide programmatic access to Link, offering a one-time-use card or a Shared Payment Token backed by payment cards and bank accounts.
Moreover, developers and businesses looking to create their own AI personal assistants can leverage Link’s wallet, circumventing the need to develop a payment solution from scratch. This integration facilitates easier and secure transactions, showcasing Stripe’s commitment to enhancing financial interactions in the AI landscape.
