As AI-generated music continues to populate streaming platforms, Spotify has introduced a new “Verified by Spotify” badge aimed at helping users distinguish authentic human artists from AI-created content. This initiative is particularly relevant as the platform seeks to offer greater transparency amidst the rise of AI-generated music.
To qualify for the verification badge, artists must satisfy defined criteria, which include having a recognizable presence both on and off the platform. This encompasses clear artist profiles with concert dates, merchandise, and active social media links. Importantly, profiles predominantly featuring AI-generated music or AI personas are not eligible for verification.
Engagement metrics also play a significant role in the process. Spotify is prioritising artists who demonstrate consistent listener engagement over time rather than those simply experiencing temporary surges in popularity. The company notes that over 99% of artists that listeners actively search for will receive the verification badge, showcasing a diverse mix of independent musicians across various genres and backgrounds.
In the forthcoming weeks, listeners can expect to see the new badges showcased on artist profiles and alongside their names in search results. The badges will feature a distinctive green checkmark to signify verification.
Given the vast number of profiles on Spotify, the badge rollout will occur gradually. The absence of a badge does not imply that an artist won’t receive it in the future. Instead, Spotify aims to focus on artists who enjoy sustained fan interest and have made significant contributions to music culture, steering away from creators of so-called “functional music,” which includes algorithm-driven content designed for passive listening.
Spotify expressed its commitment to enhancing this verification program for both artists and listeners, emphasizing the importance of authentic artistry in building meaningful connections. In conjunction with the verification badge, a new profile section is being tested, which highlights an artist’s career milestones, recent releases, and touring activities, offering users insights into their authenticity.
These updates also reflect Spotify’s response to the proliferation of low-quality AI content and impersonation concerns on the platform. This follows recent actions by music label Sony, which requested the removal of over 135,000 AI-generated songs impersonating its artists on various streaming services.
While exact figures regarding the number of AI tracks on Spotify remain unspecified, rival platform Deezer recently revealed that AI-generated music now accounts for 44% of all new uploads, underscoring the rapid growth of this trend in the music industry.
