Tesla Introduces ‘Streaks’ and New Metrics to Monitor Full Self-Driving Software Usage

by admin

Tesla is set to launch a revamped self-driving application designed to simplify the subscription process for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. This new app will also provide detailed statistics on usage patterns, such as multi-day usage streaks, adding a gamification aspect to the driver assistance experience. Tesla teased this upgrade along with other features in their upcoming significant software update via a post on X.

The FSD system, which is an advanced driver assistance technology, debuted in beta form in late 2020, receiving ongoing enhancements to enhance reliability and performance. Available for a monthly subscription of $99, the software can manage various driving tasks, including steering, lane changes, and parking; however, it still necessitates driver supervision, meaning vehicles with FSD are not fully autonomous.

CEO Elon Musk aims to position Tesla as a leader in AI and robotics beyond just automotive manufacturing, with FSD being a crucial component of that vision. Aiming for “10 million active FSD subscriptions” by 2035 is a significant goal for Musk, linked to the potential for a substantial payout under his ambitious compensation plan.

While the redesigned self-driving app may not appear significant at first glance, it has considerable implications for increasing FSD adoption. Currently, Tesla owners can subscribe to FSD via their vehicle’s touchscreen or mobile app, but this process involves several steps. The new app will allow subscriptions to be completed with a single tap. However, it is important to note that this feature will only be available to Tesla models equipped with the A14 chip, or FSD Hardware 4.0, which has been included in vehicles since January 2023.

The updated application aims to enhance user engagement by showcasing a wide range of statistics, far exceeding the current data available to FSD subscribers. Presently, FSD users only see total miles driven alongside the percentage accomplished using FSD. The new features will include visualisations like bar charts illustrating FSD usage and tracking user “streaks” that indicate consecutive days of use.

FSD (Supervised) is accessible in Australia, Canada, China, Mexico, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, South Korea, and the United States. Recently, on April 10, Dutch regulators approved FSD for use in the Netherlands following extensive research and testing, further expanding the software’s reach.

With these advancements, Tesla continues its push to refine the user experience and bolster its self-driving technology’s appeal among vehicle owners.
