Jack Clark, a co-founder and the Head of Public Benefit at Anthropic, has confirmed that the AI firm briefed the Trump administration on its new AI model, Mythos. This model, touted for its formidable cybersecurity capabilities, poses significant risks, leading to its decision to withhold public release.
In a recent discussion at the Semafor World Economy summit, Clark addressed the company’s ongoing communication with the U.S. government, despite facing a lawsuit against the Department of Defense (DOD). The lawsuit arose after the DOD classified Anthropic as a supply-chain risk, disputing the military’s potential unrestricted access to Anthropic’s AI systems for controversial applications like mass surveillance and autonomous weapons—an opportunity ultimately awarded to OpenAI. Clark downplayed the gravity of the designation as a mere “narrow contracting dispute” but emphasised the importance of national security discussions.
Clark asserted that the government must be kept informed of advanced technologies and called for collaborations between private sectors and government entities, highlighting that the revolutionary nature of current AI developments could intersect with critical national security interests. He elaborated that discussions about Mythos and forthcoming models are integral to forging these partnerships.
Reports emerged indicating that Trump administration officials have encouraged major banks, including JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs, to explore Mythos.
Additionally, Clark reflected on the societal impacts of AI, particularly concerning employment. While Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei has warned of potential high unemployment rates reminiscent of the Great Depression due to rapid AI advancement, Clark maintains a more nuanced view. He noted only a slight decrease in early graduate employability within specific sectors, though the company is preparing for larger employment shifts if necessary.
When asked about the educational paths future students should consider amidst evolving AI landscapes, Clark suggested prioritising majors that promote interdisciplinary synthesis and analytical thinking. He argued that AI expands access to a wealth of expertise across various fields, underscoring the importance of asking insightful questions and generating innovative ideas by merging insights from diverse disciplines.
