Tesla has announced the upcoming launch of a revamped self-driving app that aims to streamline the subscription process for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. This new app will provide owners with detailed usage statistics, including multi-day streaks, introducing a gamified element to the driver assistance experience.
In a recent post shared on X, Tesla previewed the enhanced app, alongside additional features that will accompany its major software update. The FSD programme, which began its beta phase in late 2020, is an advanced driver assistance system that has undergone continuous updates to enhance performance and reliability. Available for a monthly subscription of $99, FSD can perform various tasks like steering, lane changes, and parking. However, it still necessitates driver supervision, meaning vehicles using this system are not fully autonomous.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, intends to position the company as a leader in AI and robotics, further integrating FSD into this vision. One of Musk’s key aspirations is to reach 10 million active FSD subscriptions by 2035, tied to his ambitious $1 trillion compensation package.
While the redesigned app might appear to have limited significance in encouraging wider adoption of FSD, it does play a crucial role. Currently, Tesla owners can subscribe to FSD using the vehicle’s touchscreen or the mobile app, which involves multiple steps. With the new app, subscribing will only require a single tap, though it will be exclusive to vehicles equipped with the A14 chip (FSD Hardware 4.0), which started shipping in January 2023.
The updated self-driving app will showcase a broader range of statistics for FSD subscribers, going beyond what is currently available. Users will be able to view their total miles driven and the percentage of that distance completed with FSD engaged. Additionally, the app will feature graphical displays of FSD usage, such as bar charts, and will track user engagement by noting consecutive days of FSD use.
The FSD (Supervised) system is available in several countries including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, China, Mexico, Puerto Rico, South Korea, and the United States. Recently, the Dutch regulator RDW gave the green light for the use of FSD in the Netherlands, further validating Tesla’s ambitious self-driving capabilities.
In summary, Tesla’s upcoming app is set to enhance the user experience for FSD subscribers, making it easier to subscribe and monitor usage while aligning with the company’s goals for broader adoption of automated driving technology.
