Amjad Masad, the founder of Replit, has observed significant transformations in his company over the past 18 months. Originally generating $2.8 million in revenue in 2024, Replit is now on a trajectory that Masad estimates could lead to a billion-dollar annual run rate.
During a recent appearance at TechCrunch’s StrictlyVC event in San Francisco, Masad addressed a variety of pressing questions in the industry, especially in light of Cursor’s reported acquisition talks with SpaceX valued at $60 billion. A key topic was Replit’s remarkable net revenue retention, reportedly hitting as high as 300%. Masad is also prepared to take legal action against Apple for what he describes as false claims during their ongoing App Store dispute, and he hinted at the possibility of investing in customers.
When discussing independence, Masad contrasted Replit’s financial health with that of Cursor, which he noted is struggling with negative gross margins. He expressed confidence in Replit’s ability to maintain independence, citing their track record of being gross margin positive for over a year, in contrast to others in the sector that are burning through cash while trying to innovate.
Masad highlighted Replit’s unique position in the market, targeting non-technical users with an end-to-end platform that simplifies software creation. He remarked, “We’ve built a platform that allows people with little to no technical knowledge to create software.” This focus on inclusivity has helped Replit offer considerable value, even if it comes at a higher cost than competitors.
On the issue of acquisitions, Masad acknowledged ongoing discussions with partners but reiterated his commitment to keeping Replit independent. The company began envisioning a world with a billion software creators back in 2018, a dream that is increasingly feasible, particularly following the release of their agentic coding experience in September 2024.
Masad also shared insights about partnerships with AI labs such as Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, praising each for different strengths. He noted the impressive capabilities of Anthropic’s models and highlighted Google’s cost-effectiveness. In terms of winning enterprise deals, Replit’s security and user-friendly features have proven to be key differentiators.
Regarding customer retention, Masad indicated that Replit experiences very low churn rates and cited high net retention figures. Enterprises that adopt the full Replit stack often prefer to stay with it, particularly due to its security features which help protect sensitive data.
On the subject of AI bloat, Masad underestimated the risks for Replit’s users, citing substantial returns on investment. Enterprises generally find their expenditures on the platform yield impressive financial returns.
Masad also addressed ongoing challenges with Apple, which he claims is unjustly blocking Replit’s app updates. He expressed desire for collaboration with Apple but remained firm regarding the alleged misinformation disrupting their App Store presence.
Finally, on exploring potential investments in startups that originate on Replit, Masad reflected on the success of various ventures launched through the platform, emphasizing an exciting era of entrepreneurship among Replit users and the significant revenue growth they’re achieving.
