Microsoft Reports Over 20 Million Paying Users for Copilot, and Engagement is Strong

by admin

Microsoft’s M365 Copilot is steadily gaining traction, dispelling notions that the AI tool is rarely used. In a recent earnings call, CEO Satya Nadella announced that the number of paid enterprise subscriptions has surged to 20 million. This represents a fourfold increase in companies securing over 50,000 licenses each, with prominent clients like Bayer, Johnson & Johnson, and Roche controlling significant seat volumes; a notable deal was struck with Accenture for 740,000 seats, marking Microsoft’s largest acquisition yet.

Nadella highlighted a significant uptick in user engagement, noting that Copilot queries have risen almost 20% quarter-over-quarter. This engagement is now comparable to that seen with Outlook, indicating that users are incorporating Copilot into their daily work routines. He emphasised that Copilot does not solely rely on OpenAI’s model—users can access multiple AI models for more efficient responses.

The advent of “Agent mode,” which has now become the default experience across Copilot applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, is driving this increased usage. With this feature, Copilot can execute multi-step tasks directly within documents, allowing users to delegate and automate more complex workflows.

Nadella’s comments were echoed by Morgan Stanley’s Keith Weiss, who described the Copilot engagement statistics as notably impressive and exceeding general expectations. Furthermore, Copilot now supports Anthropic’s Claude, offering users enhanced functionality through intelligent routing of responses across various AI models.

Overall, Microsoft’s commitment to integrating advanced AI tools is reshaping how users interact with its productivity suite, solidifying M365 Copilot’s role as a cornerstone of enterprise software.
