Bluesky, the decentralised social media platform, is currently facing ongoing disruptions to its website and app attributed to a sophisticated Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack. COO Rose Wang confirmed that the issues, which began on April 15, have resulted in intermittent service outages affecting user feeds, notifications, threads, and search functionalities. Although these attacks do not typically entail unauthorised access to sensitive data, they still greatly hinder user experience and company operations.
Despite the challenges, Bluesky has not detected any breaches of private data and is actively working to resolve the service disruptions. The situation escalated late Thursday, leading to a dramatic increase in interference with app functionality, leaving users frustrated with error messages and slow loading times. For example, attempts to access popular feeds often result in messages indicating high traffic or temporary unavailability.
The platform’s status page, a resource for updates, has been unreliable amid these complications. Bluesky’s team has promised to provide further updates on the attack and measures to mitigate its effects but has not yet indicated a timeline for resolution. Users have reported that while some components of the platform remain functional—like personal feeds—others, such as community feeds, are frequently inaccessible.
Amidst the turmoil, Bluesky’s protocol engineer Bryan Newbold expressed challenges with the system in a social media post, indicating the team is working hard to alleviate the issue. Interestingly, while Bluesky faces considerable hurdles, other communities using the same underlying protocol have been operating without significant issues, highlighting a potentially isolated technical crisis rather than a widespread protocol failure.
The current situation not only highlights the difficulties facing Bluesky but also serves as a reminder of the complex security challenges confronting digital platforms in an age increasingly sensitive to cyber threats. The team strongly urges users to remain patient as they navigate through these issues and strive to bring the platform back to full functionality.
