Roblox Unveils New Agentic Tools for Its AI Assistant to Enhance Game Planning, Building, and Testing

by admin

Roblox is enhancing its platform with new agentic features designed to assist developers in the planning, building, and testing of games. The company is revamping Roblox Assistant, its AI tool, to function as a collaborative partner throughout the game development process.

Recognising the limitations of traditional AI tools that provide singular outputs from prompts, Roblox is introducing a “Planning Mode.” This mode aims to facilitate meaningful interactions between creators and the Assistant, allowing it to analyze game code, pose clarifying questions, and convert prompts into actionable plans. This way, developers can better reflect their original intent in their games.

In this mode, developers are guided in forming a concrete plan for their game, refining details through feedback, finalising their approach, and ultimately executing the plan. The Assistant’s ability to ask follow-up questions—for instance, regarding the visual style of game elements or how resources should be created—ensures creators can fine-tune their projects before actual changes are implemented.

Planning Mode functions alongside various AI tools, including two newly introduced features: Mesh Generation and Procedural Model Generation. Mesh Generation allows developers to seamlessly insert realistic 3D objects into their games, streamlining the process of developing assets unlike the traditional use of placeholder items. For instance, developers can easily create detailed models like campfires and adjust attributes such as lighting and timing.

Procedural Models will enable developers to create editable 3D models through coding, with the Assistant facilitating the positioning and scaling of objects based on their spatial relationships within the game. Elements like the number of shelves in a bookcase or the height of a staircase can be adjusted dynamically, providing flexible building blocks that can be reused in different contexts.

Nick Tornow, Senior Vice President of Engineering at Roblox, expressed that the new features aim to diminish the gap between creative vision and execution, empowering creators to transition from concept to gameplay more efficiently. Planning Mode and additional procedural generation tools represent a significant enhancement in how creators can approach game development, acting as a multi-step development partner.

As the Planning Mode executes the development plan, it utilises playtesting tools to capture output logs, screenshots, and design inputs, identifying bugs and providing feedback to the Assistant for automatic fixes. This iterative testing mechanism fosters a self-correcting system that becomes more proficient over time, according to Roblox.

In the near future, Roblox aims to enable multiple AI agents to collaborate, manage complex workflows in the cloud, and tackle tasks such as coding and character creation. This strategic path forward also intends to facilitate seamless integration of third-party tools with Roblox Studio, making the development process even more robust and user-friendly.
