On Thursday, OpenAI unveiled its latest AI model, GPT-5.5, described as the “smartest and most intuitive” iteration to date. According to co-founder Greg Brockman, this advancement moves the company closer to developing a versatile “superapp” that integrates various AI functionalities into one platform. Brockman highlighted the model’s enhanced abilities, labelling it a significant step toward more agentic and intuitive computing.
He noted that GPT-5.5 operates faster and more efficiently than its predecessor, GPT-5.4, requiring fewer tokens for processing. This increased efficiency means businesses and consumers have access to a broader range of AI capabilities aimed at streamlining tasks and improving productivity.
The concept of the “superapp” was elaborated upon, with plans to merge ChatGPT, Codex, and an AI-driven browser into a cohesive service tailored for enterprise users. This idea resonates within the tech industry, notably with Elon Musk, who seeks to transform X (formerly Twitter) into a similar multifunctional platform.
OpenAI’s pace of innovation has been rapid, with multiple model releases in recent months. Jakub Pachocki, the company’s chief scientist, mentioned that significant advancements in AI are expected both in the short and medium term, despite the past two years seeming slower in comparison to anticipated growth.
GPT-5.5 is touted for its versatility across diverse applications, including coding, knowledge work, and experimental areas such as mathematics and scientific research. OpenAI has presented data indicating that this new model outperforms previous versions and some competitor models, including Google’s Gemini 3.1 Pro and Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.5, across various benchmarks.
The competitive landscape with Anthropic was also addressed during the press briefing. When questioned about the capabilities of GPT-5.5 in comparison to Anthropic’s Mythos cybersecurity tool, Mia Glaese from OpenAI stressed the company’s robust cybersecurity strategy and the safe deployment of its models.
Mark Chen, OpenAI’s chief research officer, emphasized that GPT-5.5 excels in navigating computer-related tasks and demonstrates significant improvements in workflows related to scientific and technical research. He expressed optimism about the potential applications of the model, particularly in drug discovery, an area gaining traction in the industry.
As of Thursday, GPT-5.5 is now available to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users within ChatGPT, while a separate 5.5 Pro version will be deployed to Pro, Business, and Enterprise clients. This release signifies OpenAI’s commitment to enhancing AI interactions and opening new frontiers in digital capabilities.
