Yelp is evolving beyond its traditional role as a review platform to become an interactive assistant that allows users to ask questions and fulfil tasks without leaving the app. This shift follows the increasing engagement with AI chatbots, aiming to streamline user experience by keeping actions within a conversational interface.

Launched in 2024, Yelp’s AI assistant is designed to help users navigate various services based on specific needs. During a demonstration by Akhil Kuduvalli Ramesh, Yelp’s Senior Vice President of Product, users could effortlessly obtain hiking recommendations, order food through DoorDash, and make restaurant reservations—all without exiting the chat window. This updated service positions Yelp as a platform not merely for reviews but as a comprehensive resource for inquiries and subsequent actions.

The AI technology leverages Yelp’s extensive database, drawing from detailed business information and user reviews to provide accurate and prompt responses. Users can interact with the assistant through a dedicated section located prominently in the app’s navigation, fostering greater accessibility. The assistant will initially be available on both iOS and Android, with plans for a desktop version and broader business integrations to follow.

In addition to facilitating information retrieval, Yelp’s assistant now incorporates connections with third-party services, allowing users to complete various tasks like ordering food from Grubhub or scheduling appointments via Vagaro and ZocDoc without manually navigating to different apps. However, it’s important to note that actions redirect users to external websites for final transactions rather than being fully completed within the chat.

Further enhancements to Yelp include improvements to user experience, such as a feature that enables users to scan menus and view real-time dish photos. Additionally, natural language queries will become part of the search functionality, allowing users to explore a business’s media gallery more intuitively. An AI-driven tagging system for business owners will streamline the process of categorizing before-and-after photos, reducing manual input.
