Zoom Collaborates with Global Partners to Authenticate Participants in Meetings

by admin

Zoom has entered into a partnership with World, a human identification verification firm founded by Sam Altman, to combat the growing threat of AI-generated imposters infiltrating virtual meetings. This concern has intensified following alarming incidents, such as an event in early 2024, where engineering firm Arup suffered a staggering loss of $25 million due to an employee unwittingly engaging with AI deepfakes during a video call. This scenario has been echoed by other firms, including a similar attack on a multinational corporation in Singapore in 2025.

Financial repercussions from deepfake fraud have escalated dramatically, with losses exceeding $200 million in the initial quarter of the previous year alone, and the average cost per incident climbing to over $500,000. While many individuals may not face these fraudulent attempts personally, they pose a severe risk for businesses, particularly those frequently conducting high-stakes transactions through video calls.

Although existing techniques for detecting deepfakes during meetings analyse video frames for signs of manipulation, these methods are becoming less reliable as AI technology continues to advance. In response, World is introducing its World ID Deep Face technology, which employs a comprehensive three-step verification process to confirm the authenticity of meeting participants. This involves comparing a signed image collected during user registration via World’s Orb device, performing a real-time facial scan from the user’s device, and using a live video frame visible to other participants. A participant receives a “Verified Human” badge only when all three checks are aligned.

Zoom now allows hosts to activate a Deep Face waiting room, requiring all participants to authenticate their identities prior to joining. Participants also have the option to request verification during an ongoing call.

“This integration aligns with Zoom’s open ecosystem strategy, providing customers with various methods to enhance trust in their workflows, depending on their specific needs,” stated Zoom spokesperson Travis Isaman.

Outside of Zoom, World is expanding its reach by partnering with other platforms, including Tinder and Visa, for human verification solutions. Recently, they unveiled technology aimed at confirming that genuine humans, rather than automated bots, operate AI shopping assistants during transactions.

This collaboration between Zoom and World highlights an increasing recognition of the need for enhanced security measures in virtual environments, as businesses aim to protect themselves against sophisticated forms of digital deception.
