On Thursday, Google unveiled an innovative feature called AI Mode, designed to enhance the browsing experience. This conversational search integration allows users of the Chrome desktop browser to access web pages alongside AI Mode, enabling a more interactive means of exploring content.
The primary aim of this new function is to facilitate seamless navigation through relevant websites, enabling users to compare information and pose follow-up questions while maintaining context from their initial search. For instance, when searching for a new coffee maker, users can describe their preferences in AI Mode and receive various suggestions. After selecting a product, they can view the retailer’s site side-by-side with AI Mode, allowing them to inquire about specifics—like cleaning ease—leveraging context from both sources to generate informed responses.
Early testers have reported a positive experience, appreciating the elimination of the need to switch tabs constantly while engaging with comprehensive materials such as articles or videos. Google notes that this dual-display function aids users in maintaining focus on their tasks by fostering a more efficient exploration of online resources.
Moreover, Google introduced an additional feature enabling enhanced search capabilities utilising existing Chrome tabs. On both desktop and mobile, users can access a “plus” menu in the search bar on the “New Tab” page or within AI Mode. This feature allows them to incorporate recent tabs into their search, thereby blending context from multiple sources into their queries. For example, while researching local hiking trails, users can combine information from open tabs and refine their search to find similar options in different locations. Likewise, students preparing for exams can gather context from ongoing research, class notes, and lecture slides, asking AI Mode for illustrative examples to clarify complex concepts.
These updates to AI Mode are currently being rolled out in the United States, available in English, with plans to reach additional regions in due course. Google is keen on transforming how users interact with information online, making the process more intuitive and efficient through these AI-powered enhancements.
