Fathom Introduces a Bot-Free Meeting Mode to Compete with Granola

by admin

In the current landscape of online meetings, numerous note-taking assistants have emerged, leading to congested virtual environments. This saturation is highlighted by the startup Fathom, which recently updated its AI-driven meeting transcription tool. Unlike existing software that requires a digital assistant to join calls, Fathom now allows users to transcribe meetings independently.

While Fathom is not alone—apps like Granola, Talat, Notion, and ChatGPT also offer transcription services—it aims to distinguish itself by including video recording capabilities and offering various modes for call transcription. A significant enhancement is the focus on speaker diarization, which helps users identify who spoke during meetings, addressing a common issue of misattribution.

Fathom’s CEO, Richard White, emphasised to TechCrunch the importance of context in meeting notes. He noted that without clear speaker identification, users often struggle to remember who said what, particularly when referencing discussions from months prior.

White indicated that the motivation behind developing a bot-less transcription service was strengthened by advancements in AI over the past six months. Alongside the primary update, Fathom plans to introduce an AI query feature for its meeting database, enhancing its utility for businesses by allowing broader context integration. Additionally, the launch of a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server will enable users to extract meeting data for incorporation into their AI platforms.

However, concerns about maintaining a reliable on-device database have been raised, particularly following issues experienced by Granola users after its recent changes disrupted AI workflows dependent on transcript data. To address these challenges, Fathom is dedicated to refining transcription accuracy while expanding the tools available for capturing meetings. An iOS app designed to record in-person meetings is also in the pipeline, signalling Fathom’s commitment to improving user experience in a world increasingly reliant on virtual communication.
