On Thursday, Google unveiled an innovative feature named AI Mode, enhancing its Chrome browser with a conversational search experience. Users can now explore the web more effectively, as clicking a link in AI Mode will display the selected webpage alongside the AI interface, allowing for simultaneous searches and queries.
This feature aims to facilitate easier exploration of relevant websites and enable users to compare details and ask follow-up questions without losing the context of their original search. For instance, if a user is in the market for a new coffee maker, they can describe their preferences in AI Mode to receive a variety of options. When they select a product, the retailer’s website opens next to AI Mode, enabling users to pose questions such as, “how simple is this to clean?” The AI will leverage content from both the webpage and the broader internet to provide informed responses.
According to Google, early testers appreciated not having to switch between multiple tabs to engage with comprehensive content, which helped them maintain their focus while navigating useful web pages. In addition to the AI Mode enhancements, Google also introduced a new method for users to search across existing tabs. By tapping the “plus” menu in the search box on the “New Tab” page or within AI Mode on both desktop and mobile, users can select previous tabs to incorporate them into their searches.
This means that if you’re investigating local hiking trails and have several tabs already open, you can combine these with your search to find similar locations. Similarly, if you’re studying for a statistics exam, you can consolidate information from your open tabs, class notes, and lecture materials to ask for illustrative examples related to specific concepts.
Currently, these updates to AI Mode are available in the U.S. for English-speaking users, with plans to roll out to other regions in the near future. This integration aims to create a more fluid and productive browsing experience by blending search and web exploration into one cohesive platform.
