This initiative is in partnership with Bookshop.org, an online platform focused on supporting local independent bookstores. Users can now find a “Get a copy for your bookshelf” button on audiobook pages within the Spotify app, which redirects them to Bookshop’s site for purchasing.
Currently, this feature is available exclusively on Android devices, with iOS users expected to access it soon. Spotify’s entry into book sales positions the platform as a notable competitor to traditional booksellers, aligning with its strategy to enhance user engagement while driving profitability. The company has been increasing subscription prices across the U.S. and Europe recently, boasting 751 million monthly active listeners.
Alongside book sales, Spotify has rolled out several additional features since their initial announcement in February. One key development is the expansion of the “Page Match” feature, which now supports over 30 languages, including French and German. This tool allows users to scan pages from physical or e-books with their smartphone cameras, linking them to the relevant sections in the audiobook. Since its launch, users employing this feature have been streaming an average of 55% more audiobook hours per week compared to other listeners, with a striking 62% discovering titles they hadn’t previously streamed.
Spotify has also introduced “Audiobook Recaps” for Android users, offering brief audio summaries that assist listeners in remembering their last position in the story. Moreover, the company has unveiled “Audiobook Charts,” which were initially introduced in the U.S. and U.K. and are now live in Germany. These charts serve as an engaging resource for users to explore trending audiobooks, thereby enhancing discovery.
