Jack Clark, co-founder and Head of Public Benefit at Anthropic, revealed that the company has updated the Trump administration about its new AI model, Mythos. This model, which boasts significant cybersecurity capabilities, has not been made publicly available due to its potential risks.
During a recent appearance at the Semafor World Economy Summit, Clark discussed Anthropic’s ongoing relationship with the U.S. government, despite the company’s lawsuit against the Department of Defense (DOD). The lawsuit stems from the DOD’s classification of Anthropic as a supply-chain risk amid concerns over how its AI systems might be deployed by the military in activities such as mass surveillance and autonomous weaponry—a contract that ultimately went to OpenAI instead.
Clark characterised the DOD’s designation as a “narrow contracting dispute,” arguing that it should not overshadow Anthropic’s commitment to national security. He expressed the importance of government awareness regarding revolutionary technological advancements, advocating for greater collaboration between the private sector and government entities on matters that affect national security.
In the wake of recent reports suggesting that Trump’s officials are urging major banks, including JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs, to experiment with Mythos, Clark maintained that discussions about the model with government officials would continue.
Moreover, Clark delved into the societal ramifications of AI, addressing topics such as unemployment and the state of higher education. While Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei has signalled that AI progress could drive unemployment to levels reminiscent of the Great Depression, Clark offered a more tempered outlook. He indicated that while they are witnessing some declines in employment opportunities for recent graduates in certain sectors, Anthropic is prepared for potential upheavals in the job market.
When questioned about what fields of study future college students should pursue in light of AI’s evolution, Clark suggested that majors requiring synthesis across multiple disciplines and fostering analytical thinking are likely to be the most beneficial. He explained that AI enables individuals to access a vast array of knowledge from experts, but the key to leveraging this knowledge lies in asking the right questions and integrating insights from diverse areas.
In summary, Clark emphasised the need for cooperation between technological innovators and government bodies to harness AI’s potential responsibly while addressing pertinent societal challenges.
