AI Data Center Startup Fluidstack Negotiates $1 Billion Funding Round at $18 Billion Valuation Just Months After Securing $7.5 Billion, According to Reports

Fluidstack, a burgeoning startup that develops dedicated data centres tailored for AI firms, is reportedly in discussions to secure a substantial $1 billion funding round, which could elevate its valuation to $18 billion, potentially with Jane Street leading the investment, as per Bloomberg’s sources. If successful, this would mark a significant jump in valuation, more than doubling its worth within a few months.

Back in December, Fluidstack was attempting to raise around $700 million at a valuation of $7.5 billion, as reported by Bloomberg, although the completion of that round was not officially declared. This round was anticipated to be driven by Situational Awareness, an AGI-focused fund set up by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, with backing from notable figures such as the Collison brothers from Stripe, former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, and AI entrepreneur Daniel Gross. As of February, discussions were reportedly ongoing with Google, which showed interest in contributing $100 million to the funding effort.

The excitement surrounding Fluidstack rests on solid grounds. Notably, Anthropic, a leading AI company, announced a groundbreaking $50 billion agreement with Fluidstack to create customised data centres in Texas and New York, specifically for its operational needs. Unlike larger cloud providers like AWS, Fluidstack’s infrastructure is solely designed for AI usage, a fact that distinguishes it from typical hyperscalers.

This agreement signifies a strong endorsement for Fluidstack, which was relatively under the radar in the U.S. market prior to this deal. Anthropic, which predominantly utilises AWS and Google Cloud to power its AI model, Claude, is experiencing rapid growth, necessitating greater capacity and autonomy over its cloud infrastructure. To accommodate this evolution, Fluidstack has even shifted its headquarters from the UK to New York and has opted out of a massive €10 billion AI initiative in France to concentrate on opportunities within the U.S. market.

In addition to its collaboration with Anthropic, Fluidstack’s clientele includes Meta, Poolside, Black Forest Labs, among others. Before partnering with Anthropic, Fluidstack garnered recognition for providing infrastructure solutions to Mistral.

Despite the surge in interest and partnerships, Fluidstack has not commented on the current funding discussions and developments. This growing startup illustrates the increasing demand for specialised data infrastructure tailored to the unique requirements of the AI landscape, underscoring the sector’s dynamic nature and potential for future expansion.
