Jack Clark, co-founder and Head of Public Benefit at Anthropic, has revealed that the AI company briefed the Trump administration on its newly developed Mythos model, which has been deemed too perilous for public release due to its strong cybersecurity capabilities. During an interview at Semafor’s World Economy Summit, Clark elaborated on Anthropic’s complicated relationship with the U.S. government, specifically addressing a lawsuit filed by the company against Trump’s Department of Defense this March. The DOD had classified Anthropic as a supply chain risk, which stemmed from conflicts over the military’s potential unrestricted access to their AI systems for controversial purposes like mass surveillance and the development of autonomous weapons.
Clark dismissed the supply chain risk label as a mere “narrow contracting dispute,” asserting that it should not detract from Anthropic’s commitment to national security. He emphasized the necessity for the government to stay informed about advancements in AI and the potential for partnerships with the private sector to address national security concerns more proactively. He confirmed that discussions about Mythos and subsequent models would continue with governmental officials.
Reports have indicated that members of the Trump administration, including Treasury officials, are encouraging major banks such as JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs to evaluate the Mythos model. During the interview, Clark also touched on AI’s societal impacts, such as the disruption of employment and the evolution of higher education. While Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, cautioned that AI advancements could result in soaring unemployment levels similar to those seen during the Great Depression, Clark holds a different perspective. He noted that only a slight decline in early graduate employment is evident in certain industries, and Anthropic is preparing for any significant employment shifts that might arise.
When asked which college majors students should focus on to adapt to AI’s influence, Clark suggested that interdisciplinary studies fostering analytical thinking will be of utmost value. He asserted that AI provides access to diverse subject matter experts, hence emphasising the importance of asking the right questions and synthesising insights from various disciplines. This approach will be crucial in navigating the evolving landscape shaped by artificial intelligence.
