Google has announced a new feature for its Chrome browser, dubbed “Skills,” which enhances user interaction with the company’s Gemini AI. This functionality allows users to save and easily reuse their preferred AI prompts across different web pages, eliminating the need to retype them.
The introduction of Skills coincides with the integration of Gemini AI into Chrome and follows the emergence of numerous competitors in the browser market, including OpenAI’s Atlas and Perplexity’s Comet. Currently, Gemini enables users to request information from web pages, summarise content, or execute various tasks. The Skills feature builds on this capability, allowing users to create personalised AI prompts that can be quickly accessed with a click.
For example, users who frequent recipe websites can save prompts for vegan substitutions and apply them across various pages. To activate a Skill, users can either type a forward slash (/) or click a plus sign (+) button, after which the Skill will function on the active webpage and selected tabs. Users also have the flexibility to edit these Skills whenever needed.
In beta tests, early adopters have employed Skills for various applications, including health and wellness tasks, shopping comparisons, and document summarisation. To further assist users, Google is launching a Skills library that features common workflows and tasks in areas such as productivity, cooking, and budgeting. Users can easily incorporate these pre-set Skills into their Chrome, and they can be customised to fit specific needs by modifying the prompts.
Similar to other Gemini functions within Chrome, the Skills feature will confirm user actions before proceeding, such as sending emails or scheduling calendar events. Skills are rolling out to Chrome Desktop users logged in to their Google account, though initially, they will only support browsers set to English (US).
This new addition promises to enhance the browsing experience by making it more efficient and tailored to individual user preferences, reflecting Google’s ongoing commitment to integrating AI seamlessly into everyday tools.
