Microsoft is exploring the integration of features inspired by OpenClaw into its Microsoft 365 Copilot tool, with a focus on enhancing security controls for enterprise clients. This move comes amid a rise in agent-based tools within Microsoft’s ecosystem. OpenClaw, an open-source tool operating locally on users’ machines, allows the creation of automated agents that perform tasks autonomously.
If Microsoft successfully develops a locally running version of Claw, it will complement existing tools that facilitate productivity across its Microsoft 365 platform. One such innovation, revealed in March, is Copilot Cowork. This feature not only fetches information but also executes actions within Microsoft 365 applications, utilising an advanced “Work IQ” technology to personalise user experiences. Notably, Microsoft has incorporated Anthropic’s Claude AI into Cowork, though this service operates in the cloud rather than on local hardware.
In addition, the February launch of Copilot Tasks introduced another cloud-based agent designed for efficient task management. Initially marketed to prosumers, it can handle a variety of tasks, from email management to planning travel, though it remains cloud-dependent.
Details about Microsoft’s version of Claw are still under wraps. However, the company indicated that the new agent would function continuously, performing multi-step tasks autonomously over extended durations. The potential appeal lies in overcoming the security challenges faced by the OpenClaw community, which has gained popularity among Mac Mini users.
Microsoft’s strategy may be motivated by the success of Mac Mini in the OpenClaw space, as demand for these compact desktops has surged. The integration of its own version of Claw may further drive engagement within its user base, prioritising security and functionality.
The tech giant is anticipated to unveil this new agent or enhancements to its existing tools at the upcoming Microsoft Build conference in June. Further insights on how this agent aligns with Microsoft’s suite of tools are expected as the company responds to inquiries.
