Microsoft is Developing a New Agent Similar to OpenClaw

by admin

Microsoft is exploring the integration of features inspired by the OpenClaw tool into its Microsoft 365 Copilot, targeting enterprise users with enhanced security measures compared to the open-source OpenClaw. OpenClaw operates locally on a user’s device, enabling the creation of agents that perform tasks autonomously. A Microsoft variant of such a tool would align with the company’s recent announcements regarding similar agent-based technologies.

In March this year, Microsoft unveiled Copilot Cowork, which goes beyond simply offering search results by enabling actions within Microsoft 365 applications. Powered by “Work IQ” technology, this feature personalises user interactions across the platform. Microsoft has collaborated with Anthropic to incorporate its Claude model within Cowork, positioning it as a preferred choice among OpenClaw users. Notably, while OpenClaw can function on various models, Cowork operates in the cloud, differing from the local operational capabilities of OpenClaw.

Additionally, in February, Microsoft introduced Copilot Tasks, aimed at task completion, particularly for prosumers, with functionalities such as email management and travel organisation. This agent, however, also relies on cloud processing. Details about whether Microsoft’s upcoming tool will work locally or simply incorporate popular OpenClaw features remain unclear. The envisioned agent would enable continuous operation, capable of executing complex, multi-step tasks over extended periods.

OpenClaw users have largely favoured the Mac Mini platform, catalysing a surge in sales of these compact desktop computers. Microsoft’s desire to develop its own agent may encompass both security concerns and market competitiveness.

The tech giant is expected to reveal this new Claw or an enhanced version of its existing tools at the upcoming Microsoft Build conference in June. The company has been approached for comment regarding how this new Claw will integrate with its other offerings.
