YouTube has introduced a new policy aimed at enhancing the livestreaming experience by pausing advertisements during high-engagement chats. The Google-owned platform will now refrain from displaying ads when chat activity peaks, particularly when viewers express support through Super Chat, Super Stickers, or gifts. This marks a departure from the previous model, where ad-free viewing was exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers.
In a recent blog announcement, YouTube highlighted its intention to “protect that collective vibe” during energised livestreams. The platform’s automated system will detect when audience interaction surges and promptly suppress ads for all viewers to maintain engagement continuity.
The rationale behind this update is to assist creators in sustaining viewer momentum, allowing them to focus on delivering content without ad interruptions. Furthermore, users who demonstrate support by purchasing Super Chats, Super Stickers, or gifts will receive a personalised ad-free experience immediately after their transaction. For clarity, Super Chats enable viewers to pay to spotlight their messages, while Super Stickers are purchasable images that enhance the visibility of their comments.
Alongside this change, YouTube has also rolled out additional features for live content creators. The gifting feature is now available to creators in several countries, including Canada, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand. Additionally, livestreaming capabilities have expanded, allowing viewers to send GIFs during horizontal streams from mobile devices, which previously was limited to vertical formats.
Moreover, creators can now livestream simultaneously in both vertical and horizontal orientations, with a unified chat experience for all viewers. This move is designed to accommodate the growing trend of connected TV usage—over 30% of live watch time in the U.S. was attributed to these devices in 2025—allowing for a more versatile streaming experience across various screen types.
This announcement comes shortly after YouTube adjusted its subscription prices for YouTube Premium in the U.S., with the individual plan rising from $13.99 to $15.99 and the family plan increasing from $22.99 to $26.99 per month.
