The demand for electrical transformers, particularly driven by the rise of AI data centres, has reached unprecedented levels, prompting investor interest in emerging startups like Ayr Energy, which utilises traditional iron-core technology. Despite the prevalence of newer alternatives, Ayr’s co-founder and CEO, Anirudh Reddy, believes the iron-core transformer still has significant market potential, as reflected in their order book exceeding $500 million.
Ayr Energy is entering a competitive landscape dominated by established giants such as GE, Siemens, and Mitsubishi, who have been manufacturing transformers for decades. For much of this time, transformer demand was stable and predictable. However, the conjunction of electrification and the AI boom has led to a surge in demand, with projections suggesting it may double by the middle of the decade, according to Global Market Insights.
While existing manufacturers are cautious about investing in new production lines—having witnessed past demand fluctuations—Reddy and his team perceive a broader shift. They believe the current surge in demand could represent a sustained period of growth rather than temporary spikes, suggesting a ‘super cycle’ in the industry.
Ayr collaborates with Indian manufacturers to create transformers that adhere to its innovative specifications. Their designs are more modular than standard transformers, enabling clients to modify orders during the manufacturing process. This flexibility proves beneficial for clients such as renewable energy firms and data centre developers, who face extended lead times and need timely adjustments to their transformers to match evolving project requirements.
Ayr’s strategy involves capitalising on this demand surge to establish itself in the transformer market, with aspirations to eventually incorporate advanced technologies like solid-state transformers into their offerings. This ambitious approach aims to disrupt the current market dynamics and find a niche within the industry.
