OpenAI is reportedly exploring hardware projects, including the development of a smartphone in collaboration with MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare, according to industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. This ambitious initiative suggests that OpenAI is not only looking to enhance its hardware capabilities but may also consider an ecosystem that relies on AI agents rather than traditional applications, potentially bypassing the restrictions enforced by major tech players like Apple and Google.
Kuo outlines that OpenAI’s smartphone could leverage AI to perform various tasks, providing a more seamless user experience. This move towards AI-centric functionality could allow OpenAI to gather more user data and understand context better than conventional app-based models. Currently, the app ecosystems of established companies limit AI’s potential access to device resources and user information, but a proprietary hardware solution might maximise the AI capabilities OpenAI aims to deliver.
The notion of a future devoid of apps is gaining traction beyond OpenAI. Vibe coding app developers have suggested a direction where traditional applications diminish, aligning with remarks made by Nothing CEO Carl Pei at SXSW regarding the phasing out of apps. This shared vision hints at a significant transformation in how users interact with technology.
Kuo predicts that the smartphone will incorporate a blend of on-device and cloud-based AI models to address varying user needs effectively. By obtaining a richer dataset on user habits, OpenAI could fine-tune its offerings, enhancing the relevance and efficacy of its AI technologies.
The specifications for this new smartphone are expected to be finalised by the end of this year or early next year, with mass production set to commence in 2028. Earlier this year, OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, Chris Lehane, indicated that the company aims to unveil its first hardware product by the latter half of 2026, which has previously sparked speculation about a pair of uniquely designed earbuds.
As of now, OpenAI has not issued any comments on these developments. This strategic hardware venture could mark a pivotal shift in OpenAI’s engagement with consumers, positioning it closer to the everyday user and significantly expanding its influence in the technology landscape.
