Google’s Gemini AI Assistant to Make Its Debut in Millions of Vehicles

by admin

Google has made a noteworthy announcement regarding the rollout of its advanced conversational AI, Gemini, to vehicles with Google built-in functionality. This upgrade supersedes the existing Google Assistant and aims to enhance the driving experience with more intuitive interactions. The initiative follows closely on the heels of General Motors’ recent revelation that Gemini will be available in roughly 4 million vehicles produced from the 2022 model year onwards, including popular brands like Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC. Importantly, Google has not restricted Gemini’s deployment to GM vehicles, suggesting a broader integration across various automakers.

The launch will commence in the United States, initially offering English-language support, with a gradual expansion planned in the coming months. Excitingly, Gemini is not limited to just new cars; existing compatible vehicles will also be able to receive the software upgrade, broadening its reach.

First introduced in 2020, cars equipped with Google built-in will now benefit from Gemini’s capabilities, which prioritise a more natural, conversational manner for drivers to engage with their vehicles. For example, drivers will soon be able to converse freely to accomplish tasks or gather information. A driver might request a highly-rated restaurant with outdoor seating during their journey, and Gemini can swiftly provide relevant suggestions using Google Maps data, while handling queries about parking availability or menu options, including dietary preferences.

This sophisticated AI can also manage a variety of tasks such as activating climate controls, offering directions, recommending music, summarising incoming messages, and enabling hands-free responses—all through voice commands.

Additionally, there’s a beta feature called Gemini Live that allows for more informal, real-time discussions. Drivers can initiate this by tapping a button in the interface or saying, “Hey Google, let’s talk.” This feature is intended to facilitate brainstorming, learning, or general conversations while driving.

For those drivers who are signed into their Google accounts in compatible vehicles, an upgrade prompt will appear. Gemini will be accessible through voice commands, on-screen microphones, or steering wheel controls.

Looking ahead, Google has indicated plans to broaden Gemini’s language support and expand its availability to more regions. Future updates may also enhance integration with Google services such as Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home, promising a richer and more connected driving experience.
