X has introduced a significant feature called Grok-powered Custom Timelines, allowing users to create personalized feeds on various topics from its extensive list of over 75 categories. According to the company, this development marks one of the most substantial updates to the platform, enhancing user engagement through tailored content curated by Grok’s AI.
While the customization options are rolling out, X has also announced the discontinuation of X Communities, a feature intended for user-created discussion groups, which experienced a decline in activity. Nikita Bier, head of product at X, highlights that these custom timelines evolve based on users’ interactions rather than relying on traditional metrics like hashtags or keywords. Grok’s advanced AI enables the system to analyse every post and assign relevant topic labels, enhancing the relevance of the timelines.
Currently, the feature is exclusive to Premium subscribers using iOS, with plans for Android functionality in the future. Users keen to engage with the feature can easily pin their selected topics by scrolling past the main feeds and tapping the plus (+) icon on their home tab. Up to 10 topics can be pinned, allowing for efficient navigation of interests.
Interestingly, the layout inserts advertising in the second position of each feed, potentially boosting X’s ad revenue, which has reportedly struggled since Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform. While custom feeds might not fundamentally alter the user experience, they do provide a fresh way to explore niche topics or generate interest during specific events, like sports matches.
The array of topics includes well-known categories like Business, Technology, Sports, and Entertainment, alongside specialised niches such as Artificial Intelligence and Cryptocurrency. This feature aims to cater to users seeking diverse content, with initial selections reflecting current discussions on the platform, evident from the emphasis on topics like the Iran Conflict, Crime, and Elections under news categories.
Given the reliance on Grok’s AI, questions around potential biases in news presentation linger, though initial tests suggest a balanced mix of sources. Users now have the opportunity to refine their feeds further with new features like the “Snooze Topics,” allowing them to fine-tune content delivery based on personal preferences.
Overall, while the implementation of custom timelines presents a chance for users to receive content that aligns more closely with their interests, its long-term impact on user engagement and advertising revenue remains to be explored. The combination of custom feeds and Snooze functionalities may ultimately lead to a more tailored and enjoyable experience on X.
