Anthropic’s Ties with the Trump Administration Appear to Be Warming Up

by admin

Despite being recently classified as a supply-chain risk by the Pentagon, Anthropic continues to engage with high-ranking officials from the Trump administration. Early indications suggested a possible thaw in relations, as reports emerged that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell encouraged major banks to explore Anthropic’s new AI model, Mythos.

Anthropic’s co-founder, Jack Clark, has described the ongoing disagreement regarding the supply-chain designation as a “narrow contracting dispute,” asserting that it will not hinder the company’s engagement with the government about its advancements.

Recently, reports indicated that Bessent and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles held an introductory meeting with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. The White House characterised this encounter as “productive and constructive,” during which they discussed potential collaborations and strategies for addressing challenges related to scaling AI technology.

Anthropic echoed this sentiment, stating that Amodei’s discussions with senior administration officials centred on shared priorities such as cybersecurity, advancing AI leadership, and ensuring AI safety. The company expressed its enthusiasm for continuing these discussions.

The tension between Anthropic and the Pentagon appears to stem from disagreements over military applications of its technology. Anthropic aims to impose safeguards on its AI models to prevent their use in fully autonomous weaponry and extensive domestic surveillance. This stance seemed to conflict with the Pentagon’s interests. Notably, OpenAI secured its own military contract shortly after, which led to public backlash.

The Pentagon’s classification of Anthropic as a supply-chain risk could substantially restrict the government’s usage of the company’s models, a label typically reserved for foreign adversaries. In response, Anthropic is contesting this designation legally.

Interestingly, it seems that other sectors of the Trump administration do not align with the Pentagon’s negative perspective. An administration insider indicated to Axios that “every agency” except the Department of Defense is interested in leveraging Anthropic’s technology.

Overall, while challenges remain, particularly with the Pentagon, Anthropic is actively pursuing dialogue and partnership opportunities with various government entities, seeking to promote its technology in a constructive manner.
