Zoox Launches Its Autonomous Robotaxi Service in Austin and Miami

by admin

Zoox, the Amazon-owned autonomous vehicle company, is set to launch its custom robotaxi services in Austin, Texas, and Miami, Florida, following nearly two years of testing in these cities. The rollout, part of their early-rider initiative, is anticipated later this year.

Additionally, Zoox is significantly widening its operational footprint in San Francisco, where the service area will expand fourfold to cover the eastern half of the city for its early riders. Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, the company is enhancing its offerings by increasing the number of destinations available through its service, which already includes key attractions such as The Sphere and the T-Mobile Arena. Zoox will also be commencing tests for airport services in Las Vegas to facilitate future operations.

Currently, rides through Zoox are complimentary due to existing federal regulations, which the company is actively working to amend. Recent developments indicate progress as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a public comment period on Zoox’s request for exemptions from specific Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. These exemptions are crucial for the company to begin commercial services that involve fare-paying passengers.

Zoox remains optimistic about receiving the necessary regulatory approvals and has recently partnered with Uber to enable their robotaxis to become part of the ride-hailing giant’s offerings in Las Vegas later this year. To date, Zoox’s robotaxis have travelled nearly two million miles autonomously, carrying over 350,000 passengers, while gathering useful feedback that informs ongoing improvements. New features, such as Bluetooth audio connectivity, branded “ZooxCast,” and a “Find My Zoox” function to assist riders in busy areas, are under development.

While Zoox is not expanding as swiftly as its counterpart Waymo, which aims to roll out commercial services in 20 more cities globally this year, the company is making strides. It has begun mapping roads in Dallas and Phoenix in anticipation of future testing, alongside ongoing operations in Washington, D.C., Seattle, Los Angeles, and Atlanta.
