As TikTok Shop continues to rise in popularity, YouTube is enhancing its collaboration with Shopify, welcoming a broader range of brands to join its YouTube Shopping affiliate initiative, the firm revealed this Tuesday. This enhancement means that content creators will now have the ability to feature thousands of additional brands in their shopping-oriented videos, a substantial leap from the current few hundred brands available for tagging.
With this initiative’s expansion, Shopify Plus and Advanced merchants in the U.S. who meet the eligibility criteria have the opportunity to participate in the Shopping affiliate program.
The YouTube Shopping affiliate program offers content creators a method to monetize their videos, simultaneously enabling their viewers to discover new products. For the brands involved, it presents an alternative avenue for customer engagement and sales boost.
Through this enhanced partnership, YouTube aims to more effectively compete with TikTok, which has set a target to significantly amplify its TikTok Shop U.S. market value to $17.5 billion within this year. Though TikTok has entered the U.S. e-commerce sector more recently compared to YouTube, it has been swiftly accumulating merchants, as evidenced by TikTok’s statement in April, which confirmed the platform had amassed 500,000 U.S. merchants on TikTok Shop by the end of 2023.
Additionally, YouTube has unveiled a new Chrome extension designed for U.S.-based affilate program members, facilitating the process of saving products while exploring a brand or retailer’s website. This tool simplifies the task of tagging products in videos for creators.
This affiliate program’s broadening coincides with YouTube’s intensified focus on e-commerce as an innovative revenue stream, especially pertinent given the recent downturn in digital advertising. The initiative appears to be fruitful, with YouTube disclosing over 30 billion hours of shopping-related content consumed on the platform in 2023 alone, alongside a 25% uptick in watchtime for shopping assistance videos.
Naturally, this program stands to benefit creators seeking supplementary income through the platform. Thus, YouTube has introduced new shopping functionalities aimed at empowering creators to more effectively promote products and augment their earnings.
