Users of Google Gemini can now interact with the AI chatbot directly from their iPhone’s lock screen, thanks to a recent update released on Monday, as reported by 9to5Google. By adding a Gemini widget to their lock screen, users can access Gemini Live, Google’s near real-time voice feature for its AI chatbot, without needing to unlock their device.

With Apple’s AI-enabled Siri reportedly facing delays until 2027, other players in the AI arena are stepping up to provide iPhone users with their own AI assistants. These functionalities may offer users a glimpse of the capabilities of large language models and voice assistants, although Apple’s eventual version of an LLM-powered Siri is expected to be more seamlessly integrated with other iPhone features upon launch.

The iOS app for ChatGPT also enables users to activate OpenAI’s near real-time voice feature, called Advanced Voice Mode, directly from the lock screen.

In addition to Gemini Live, the updated Gemini app features various other lock screen widgets. These include options for capturing photos with the iPhone camera and uploading them to Gemini, setting reminders and calendar events, or starting a text chat with Gemini instantly.

Furthermore, Google announced on Monday that later in March, Gemini users on Android will have the ability to ask the AI chatbot questions regarding video and on-screen content, receiving answers in real time. These capabilities were initially introduced as part of Project Astra, Google DeepMind’s multimodal AI initiative, which is gradually being integrated into the Gemini app. To begin with, these features will be available exclusively for subscribers to Google’s $20-per-month Gemini Advanced plan.
