YC-Supported CrowdVolt Revitalizes Secondary Ticket Marketplace through Innovative Bid-Ask System

by admin

The existing system for exchanging secondary market tickets faces numerous problems, including dramatically inflated resale prices, excessive fees, and the potential for buying counterfeit or invalid tickets. These issues often lead to a less than satisfactory experience for users.

CrowdVolt is aiming to revolutionize this space with its buyer-friendly, bid-ask ticket exchange. As part of the Y Combinator Winter 2024 class, CrowdVolt draws inspiration from StockX’s resale model for sneakers. This involves buyers making bids and sellers setting prices, with transactions closing when both sides meet.

The appeal of CrowdVolt’s system, especially for music fans, lies in its ability to empower buyers to set their price points. This is a departure from the norm in secondary ticket sales, where seller preferences usually dominate. Additionally, CrowdVolt fosters direct communication between buyers and sellers, adding a layer of transparency and connection not typically found in ticket sales.

Recently, CrowdVolt received $1.4 million in seed funding from notable backers including Brickyard VC, Goodwater Capital, and Pioneer Fund, alongside angel investors like YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim. The firm intends to deploy these funds to expand into new areas starting with Miami, Chicago, and various Californian cities shortly, as well as further product refinement.

Since its launch at the end of January, CrowdVolt has specifically targeted fans of rave and EDM scenes, initially focusing on New York, particularly within Brooklyn, a hotspot for EDM enthusiasts.

The inception of CrowdVolt was driven by the personal challenges faced by three friends and co-founders — Max Hammer (CEO), Josh Karol (CTO), and Aria Mohseni (COO) — passionate about EDM. Their firsthand experiences with the opaque and cumbersome ticketing processes of existing systems sparked the creation of this platform, aimed squarely at addressing the needs of ticket buyers.

“Our adventure began from a genuine passion for EDM, including one of our co-founders [Mohseni] being a DJ. We frequented events regularly and consistently faced challenging ticketing processes, from opaque releases to confusing purchase steps. Unlike other platforms, where buyer intent is often overlooked, we’ve managed to create a marketplace that addresses this gap effectively,” recounted Hammer to TechCrunch.

This vision came at a critical time, particularly as Ticketmaster faces severe scrutiny for its heavy fees and monopolistic behavior, underscored by a recent antitrust lawsuit from the Department of Justice. Furthermore, Ticketmaster’s recent admission of a data breach has only added to its woes.

With over 3,000 active users and around 250 events to choose from, CrowdVolt is gaining momentum. Although currently web-based, plans are in place to launch a mobile application in the next six months.
