Y Combinator Invests in Its Initial Defense Venture, Ares Industries

This week marked the debut of Ares Industries, the inaugural defense startup to gain support from the renowned Y Combinator.

Detailing their ambitious plans on Y Combinator’s own platform, the company aims to revolutionize the defense industry with their affordable cruise missiles, promising compatibility with current deployment systems. They boast a projection of these missiles being both 10 times smaller and cheaper than current models, aiming to meet the rigorous demands of the [Department of Defense].

According to the team behind Ares Industries, trial runs of their missile prototypes were conducted in the vast Mojave Desert. They are gearing up to supply operational missile systems to their inaugural clients by the middle of 2025.

Speaking to the FT, Y Combinator partner Jared Friedman shared that the accelerator had begun to openly invite applications from defense technology startups earlier this year.

Garry Tan, the current CEO of Y Combinator, who previously served at Palantir, a data analytics giant known for its vital yet sometimes disputed contributions to the U.S. military and various global entities. In a recent dialogue with The New York Times, CEO Alex Karp staunchly defended Palantir’s unwavering pro-Western stance.
