On Thursday night, many users on X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, noticed that their timelines and notifications had ceased to function. Reports indicate that this glitch began around 6 p.m. Eastern on May 8, persisting for over 15 hours for some users, including this reporter. The issue appears to be on the server side, as those affected have not seen any updates on both mobile and web versions of the app. Attempts to switch devices, browsers, or subscribe to X Premium did not resolve the problem.
Downdetector, a website that tracks outages, noted a significant increase in reports of issues on X during the past 24 hours. Conversations on Reddit revealed that users across different regions, including Germany, were experiencing similar notification failures. One user expressed frustration at uninstalling and reinstalling the app only to find it ineffective.
As of now, X has not issued any official statements addressing the outages. The recent disruption follows a major outage in March, where users faced difficulties accessing their feeds and sending messages. At that time, Musk linked the incident to a potential cyberattack without presenting any evidence.
Historically, X has had several connectivity issues, with notable problems occurring in December 2022 and July 2023. After Musk’s acquisition of the platform for $44 billion in 2022, he drastically reduced the workforce by about 80%, leaving only 1,300 employees, with around 550 being engineers by January 2023. Additional layoffs affecting the engineering division occurred in November 2024.
As users await a resolution to this latest glitch, concerns linger regarding the platform’s stability amidst ongoing workforce reductions and infrastructure challenges.
