X Starts Deploying Passkey Integration for Android Devices

by admin

X, previously identified as Twitter, has unveiled the integration of passkey support on Android devices. This introduction follows the platform’s provision of passkey capabilities to iOS users earlier in April.

Employing passkey login mechanisms enhances security against unauthorized access by necessitating physical possession of a user’s device. Contrary to conventional login methods, passkeys employ biometric validation such as Face ID or Touch ID, a PIN, or a physical security key to authenticate user access.

Passkeys represent an innovative approach, eliminating the dependence on traditional usernames and passwords, which are often vulnerable to phishing scams and other security threats.

X joins a roster of prominent tech entities that have incorporated passkey functionality over the recent months. This list includes industry leaders such as Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google, PayPal, TikTok, WhatsApp, and GitHub.

For X users, the shift towards passkey usage is especially beneficial for those who previously utilized SMS-based two-factor authentication (2FA), a feature X discontinued for non-paying users the preceding year.

Activating passkeys on X is straightforward. Users should log into their account, navigate to “Your account” on the menu bar, and select “Settings and privacy.” Following this, click on “Security and account access,” then “Security,” and under “Additional password protection,” choose “Passkey.” To add a passkey, click on the respective option and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
