X is Restricting Access to Links for Signal, the Secure Messaging App Utilized by Federal Employees

by admin

Elon Musk’s platform X (previously known as Twitter) is restricting access to links from Signal.me, a URL shortener utilized by the secure messaging application Signal, enabling users to share direct links to connect with them through the app. These restrictions affect direct messages, public posts, and user profile pages, and were initially reported by the blog Disruptionist.

This alteration comes as the DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) targets federal agencies, including NASA and the Department of Education, prompting employees to turn to Signal’s encrypted messaging service for secure information sharing and whistleblowing on potentially dangerous practices.

Close to 10,000 federal employees have been dismissed across government sectors as Musk’s DOGE endeavors to reduce federal expenditures and dismantle entire departments, such as USAID.

TechCrunch encountered issues trying to share a link via post and direct message. When attempting to share through a post, a notification appears stating: “Something went wrong, but don’t worry – let’s try again.”

Any attempt to send a message containing a link to Signal.me is unsuccessful, generating a pop-up that states, “This request appears to be automated. To safeguard our users against spam and malicious behavior, we cannot fulfill this action at the moment. Please try again later.”

TechCrunch has reached out to X for further clarification.

Despite being a self-identified advocate for free speech, Musk regularly criticizes media outlets and individuals who oppose his actions. Allegations have also surfaced about his attempts to silence accounts on X belonging to those who disagree with him.
