X, the platform under Elon Musk’s ownership, has now introduced a highly anticipated feature for its direct messaging system: the capability to modify messages post sending.
As the weekend unfolded, X extended the message-editing feature to users on iOS. An engineer from the firm shared news of the deployment, indicating that the capability to edit messages would be hitting additional platforms shortly.
Here’s a guide to using the new feature:
- Navigate to a direct message conversation within your X iOS application.
- Perform a long press on a message you’ve sent or click on the three-dot menu next to that message.
- Choose the “Edit message” option to revise your sent message.
A support document reveals there’s no limitation on how soon after sending a message you can edit it. From our experimentation, it appears you can also amend older direct messages on the platform. Nonetheless, there’s a ceiling on revisions, capping it at five edits per message. This edit limitation applies to posting on the network as well.
While X acknowledges retaining a log of message edits for security purposes, it currently doesn’t offer a way to view the edit history of messages.
The expectation for editable messages within communication apps is high among users, especially since other messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and Messenger already offer this feature. Moreover, Apple joined the fray by incorporating message editing in iMessage starting with iOS 16.
