X Claims It Will Cut Payments to Clickbait Accounts

X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, is implementing a significant reduction in payments to accounts that engage in clickbait strategies and excessive news aggregation. Nikita Bier, head of product at X, announced that payouts for aggregators would be cut to 60% for the current payment cycle, with a further 20% reduction in the next cycle. The new policy particularly targets users frequently employing sensationalist terms like “🚨BREAKING” in their posts.

Bier remarked on the negative impact that over-saturation from clickbait and reposts has on authentic creators, saying it hampers the visibility and growth of new authors. He emphasized that whilst X is committed to maintaining free speech, it will not compensate users who exploit the platform through manipulative tactics.

This crackdown follows complaints from conservative news accounts after they received demotion notices from X. One notable case is Dominick McGee, known as Dom Lucre, who claimed he was one of the first creators to face demonetization after previously having his account reinstated. McGee, with 1.6 million followers, expressed bewilderment that his efforts to bring content to the platform resulted in loss of earnings, despite identifying himself as a hardworking creator.

In response to Bier’s announcement, McGee contended that X appears to be yielding to complaints from users who lack creative aspirations, even while admitting to sometimes using “BREAKING” as clickbait. Users on the platform seemed to have differing opinions, with some highlighting that McGee had overused this tactic in recent times.

Others have also voiced concerns about being affected by X’s measures. One account, PoliMath, expressed unease over receiving a low payout despite not identifying as an aggregator, which they argued contradicted their usual content style.

The timing of Bier’s comments coincided with ongoing discussions about the effectiveness of X as a traffic driver for external websites. Data analyst Nate Silver criticized the platform, noting its struggles in helping content reach broader audiences, particularly highlighting a perceived dominance of right-wing accounts. Bier rebutted Silver’s claims, while Elon Musk dismissed them as “bullshit.” Nevertheless, various analyses support Silver’s observations on X’s declining value for content sharing.

Overall, X is navigating a balancing act—attempting to foster genuine content creation while mitigating manipulative practices on its platform, all amidst an evolving landscape of user engagement and interaction.
