Wolf Games, Supported by the Creator of ‘Law & Order,’ Leverages AI to Develop Murder Mystery Games

by admin

Elliot Wolf, the executive producer and son of “Law & Order” creator Dick Wolf, is embarking on an exciting new project designed to captivate true crime enthusiasts.

Together with co-founders Andrew Adashek (CEO) and Noah Rosenberg (CTO), he is launching Wolf Games, an innovative startup that employs AI to craft daily murder mystery games. The company revealed on Wednesday that it has successfully raised $4.5 million in a pre-seed funding round.

The leading title from Wolf Games is named Public Eye, tapping into the rising passion among true crime aficionados who enjoy taking on the role of detective.

Set in a dystopian world where crime has escalated to alarming highs, the game envisions a scenario in which authorities believe engaging the public is a feasible tactic. Players will collect clues, compile evidence, and receive support from an AI assistant that steers them through their investigations and provides helpful hints for cracking the case.

However, the challenge of creating fresh murder mysteries for players to dive into each day is significant. To meet this demand, Wolf Games utilizes an AI engine that assists the writing team in generating new cases.

The AI pulls inspiration from news headlines from prominent outlets like CBS and NBC. Echoing the approach of “Law & Order,” one of television’s longest-running true crime series, the company clarifies that the game stories are primarily fictional, inspired by these headlines rather than directly imitating them.

In addition to narrative creation, AI is also utilized to generate interview clips and images of crime scenes.

“With just one click, we transform this linear narrative into a fully interactive and playable experience,” Wolf shared with TechCrunch, noting that advanced AI models like Gemini are employed to maintain character consistency throughout the storyline.

“If a character sustains a scar on their face mid-story, they’ll bear that scar every time they appear thereafter,” Wolf elaborated.

We had a chance to test the game, attempting to unravel the mystery behind a murdered store owner. Suspects included a dubious intern, an inebriated boyfriend, and a disgruntled daughter. For a narrative largely conceived by AI, we found it surprisingly engaging, complete with an unexpected twist at the end. (It’s important to note that the true crime genre has a wealth of real-life events to draw from for compelling storylines.)

While the true crime gaming landscape is fiercely competitive, the founders are confident they possess the expertise to attract a large following.

The strength of the investor lineup also tells a convincing story. Participants in the pre-seed funding round included Dick Wolf, Beats co-founder Jimmy Iovine, and United Talent Agency Chairman Paul Wachter.

Public Eye is set to debut online this summer, available as a free-to-play game with optional in-app purchases. Enthusiasts can join a waitlist to try it out.

Looking ahead, Wolf Games is contemplating collaborations with intellectual property holders to adapt popular TV shows into new gaming experiences.

It’s noteworthy that Hollywood executives are actively starting AI-focused companies, especially amidst the recent 2023 strikes that highlighted contentious debates surrounding AI usage. The Oscar-winning film “The Brutalist” exemplifies the backlash faced for employing AI voice technology.

Despite the industry wrestling with AI’s implications, an increasing number of celebrities, including Ashton Kutcher and will.i.am, are investing in AI initiatives, showcasing a collective ambition to leverage this technology for entertainment.
