Waymo’s remote assistance team was unable to resolve the situation remotely, prompting one staff member to reach out to emergency services. According to a recorded conversation, the representative expressed the robotaxi’s inability to turn around and requested law enforcement to help transport both the vehicle and its passenger. Eventually, a California Highway Patrol officer moved the stranded robotaxi to a nearby park and ride, where Waymo’s roadside assistance later took over.

This incident underscores the growing pains of Waymo’s expanding autonomous vehicle service. Critics point out that the company has increasingly depended on taxpayer-funded emergency responders to manage its vehicles during critical incidents. Reports indicate that in multiple cases, first responders had to intervene with Waymo vehicles during emergencies, including situations involving active crime scenes.

Waymo has faced scrutiny from lawmakers regarding its reliance on remote assistance workers for making decisions during complex navigational challenges. While the company touts that it employs a dedicated roadside assistance team, city officials have raised concerns about these vehicles obstructing public safety efforts, particularly during emergencies.
